January 2024

Saint John Henry Newman

Monday January 01, 2024
To write in this way
makes his words significant.
They convey each day
what he cannot speak about.
He only gets so many.

Tuesday January 02, 2024
He won’t waste his time
as he has previously
done in days gone by.
There is too much at stake now.
He must write less and breath more.

Wednesday January 03, 2024
He still loves Poland.
He will always remember
her beauty and grace.
It's the land of Kilar love.
It's the smile on her face.

Thursday January 04, 2024
Was it the headache
that incapacitated
him for half the day,
or his incapacity
to tolerate their terror?

Friday January 05, 2024
Hoping against hope:
his MO of the moment.
At least his son is
convinced that it will happen.
Like Saint Newman, he just knows.

Saturday January 06, 2024
Last January
he purchased Ian Ker’s book.
Little did he know
that it would sit on his shelf
(he wasn’t ready for it).

Sunday January 07, 2024
After he finished
writing about the terror
of “forever” for
the inoculation part,
he felt at home once again.

Monday January 08, 2024
It has become clear
that the one that was so near
has now completely
disappeared into their own
drudgery divine this time.

Tuesday January 09, 2024
He was once afraid
to go anywhere without
his true harvest moon.
He was then kindly told his
partner is a part of him.

Wednesday January 10, 2024
It never occurred
to him that the first three lines
could be a haiku.
The last two lines can serve as
a running commentary.

Thursday January 11, 2024
There are ten days left
for him to enter within
to end all without.
He knows what he has to do
as he shifts from his third vow.

Friday January 12, 2024
His recent reach out
had next to nothing to do
with a career change.
It had everything to do
with finding a furnished suite.

Saturday January 13, 2024
He wants to finish
it the way that he started,
technically speaking.
He has always felt at home
in BIOS and API.

Sunday January 14, 2024
If he had a choice,
he would never have begun
what he now must end.
The old Yiddish saying is
so telling: man plans, God laughs.

Monday January 15, 2024
A visibly sick
and stressed individual
stalked him with the news.
In the midst of this chaos
he received a kind response.

Tuesday January 16, 2024
These days are slowly
becoming more than can be
easily endured.
He is sure they signify
a life changing transition.

Wednesday January 17, 2024
What is the bottom
of the barrel blues, and what
key is it played in?
He might as well sing along,
and maybe whistle it too.

Thursday January 18, 2024
They said they have been
there before, and therefore know
how he is feeling.
He wonders whether these kind
words are too little too late.

Friday January 19, 2024
A good confession
is something that you simply
cannot teach someone.
If it is not from the heart,
then one must start it again.

Saturday January 20, 2024
The very last day
of his physical distance
has finally arrived.
The road was long and grinding
during the past twenty years.

Sunday January 21, 2024
He arrived early
for the low mass old rite at
Saint Vincent de Paul.
He quietly joined the new
rite already in progress.

Monday January 22, 2024
He woke up at six
twelve and tried to remain as
quiet as he could.
Opening the damaged door
is always a chore for him.

Tuesday January 23, 2024
The norma normans
non normata: the norm which
is the standard for
all other norms but is not
itself subject to a norm.

Wednesday January 24, 2024
The meeting was not
only objectivistic,
but also oblique.
It was as unexpected
as it was predetermined.

Thursday January 25, 2024
Little did he know
he had to drive over two
hours in the rain.
This was a small price to pay
for him to stop all the clocks.

Friday January 26, 2024
They found themselves in
their suddenly silent space
of skin, breath, and tears.
For one, brief, shining moment,
they embodied Camelot.

Saturday January 27, 2024
He honored the dead,
and supported his friend in
their shadow of grief.
He rests with the very best
artists of his time and place.

Sunday January 28, 2024
The sky cried enough
for him on the day of his
memorable wake.
We all came from far and near
to recall how dear he was.

Monday January 29, 2024
Living arrangements
have always been decided
sacrificially.
He has no issue with it
since this is what fathers do.

Tuesday January 30, 2024
The early morning
call went as well as he had
expected it would.
Moving will be minimal
at best, unlike all the rest.

Wednesday January 31, 2024
All it takes is his
reflection in the mirror
to remember it.
It has been a part of his
daily routine for ten years.
